Bel Canto?

Last night we went to the new opera in Chicago, at the Lyric Opera House–Bel Canto.  You might have heard about it because it was dealing with a hostage situation in Peru.  There was a lot of hype on the radio etc about the timing of this production.   They didn’t know about California, Paris etc -when it was written.

I thought it might have made an interesting play, but I didnt care for it as an opera.  In the first place, I cannot see the terrorists co-mingling with the hostages and creating friendships.  There we many areas that were sophomoric.

However, this year the Lyric Opera has had some wonderful operas and Im certain there will be more before the season is over.  If you have some time and extra dollars you might want to consider going. wwwlyricopera.org
